We escaped into the sea and let our troubles wash ashore 1
This is the first piece of screen printed artwork that I have completed as part of a new series of artwork I am working on which are all based on the concept that we go to the sea and nature in times of need and to release our emotions or burdens. In a sense we often enter the sea because we feel unmoored and the sensation of water and the change of perspective, the sense or release, wonder and awe as our senses are stimulated and we put our bodies in the trust of an environment so much bigger of us, helps to settle us and reset us.
I hope this artwork will immerse you and make you feel a release, it will calm your nervous system and settle your unmoored self, or just make you feel happy! It draws from photographic references of the most beautiful swim on the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides where the water was all light and colour and so transparent.
This print has been hand printed from hand drawn and hand painted transparency layers, each one adding a layer of light, colour and depth to the last. I have mono-printed (painted directly onto the screen while printing) to add colour to the mark making and texture.
